Everything About PCOS!!

At several occasions you might have passed by a lingerie online store in India or maybe in any other country and one similarity you might have noticed is that most of the hot night dress for ladies are made by keeping thin waistlines in mind. Not that being chubby is wrong, but obesity can lead to severe health hazards at a young age such as heart issues, cholesterol and so on.

One of the common reasons for weight gain in women is PCOS- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

A Brief View

PCOS is a commonly found syndrome in mostly women of reproductive ages. The most occurring symptoms in PCOS are-

  1. Increasing body weight
  2. Thinning of hair
  3. Irregularity in menstrual cycle
  4. Acne
  5. Cysts in ovary

Many researchers in the study of PCOS have inferred that there is no full proof knowledge of the exact reason causing PCOS in women. However, the two factors which heavily contribute towards PCOS are insulin resistance and hormone irregularities.

When a woman has PCOS it means that her productive hormones are imbalanced.  This gives rise to problems pertaining to ovaries such as untimely periods or having no periods at all for longer than normal time intervals. PCOS also has negative ramifications on a woman’s ability to conceive.

The hormones that play a major role in PCOS are-

  1. Androgens- this hormone is present in every woman but in a lesser scale as compared to the one suffering from PCOS.
  2. Insulin- the blood sugar of a human is maintained by this hormone. The body of a woman having PCOS might not react to insulin the way it would have otherwise reacted.
  3. Progesterone- this hormone is responsible for the menstrual cycles in a female body. In case you have PCOS, this hormone would be present in a lesser quantity than the usual.

Diagnosis

There is no single test for detecting PCOS, rather there is a set of tests and questions you will need to go through before your doctor can conclude a confirmed PCOS result. It includes a blood test to gauge the hormonal levels, cholesterol and blood sugar, then, an ultrasound test to check cysts in your ovaries, tumors and check your uterus lining.

PCOS and weight gain

PCOS results in excessive weight gain because it directly affects insulin which is responsible for converting sugar and starch into energy. PCOS makes a woman's body insulin-resistant which leads to building up of insulin and sugar-glucose in the bloodstream. Excess insulin results in secretion of androgens (male hormone) which fosters weight gain.
